For a walking pad, start an Indoor Walk in the Apple Watch Workout app and wear the watch snugly on top of your wrist. Typing or holding the desk limits arm movement, so a slow desk walk may not be recorded as you expect. A workout can provide more context, but it does not guarantee accurate steps, distance or Exercise ring credit.
What the Watch Is Counting
| Metric | What to know at a desk |
|---|---|
| Steps | Arm movement can be restricted while typing. Treat the count as an estimate, not a direct count of belt rotations. |
| Distance and pace | Indoor estimates can differ from the pad display. Both are estimates; neither is automatically a verified measurement. |
| Exercise credit | Apple says a full minute at least as intense as a brisk walk earns Exercise and Move credit; less intense activity counts toward Move. Starting a workout is not a promise that every minute will close the Exercise ring. |
| Heart rate | Fit, sensor contact and individual conditions affect readings. A watch is not a substitute for a medical measurement. |
Apple’s measurement guidance distinguishes Activity’s reliance on arm motion from the Workout app’s use of additional sensors. Its example for hands occupied is an outdoor walk; that does not prove an Indoor Walk will recover every desk step.
Set Up and Compare
- Open Workout and choose Indoor Walk. If it is absent from the list, scroll to Add Workout. Apple lists indoor walking as a workout type.
- Wear the watch snugly on top of your wrist, enable wrist detection and keep Health Details current. See Apple’s fit and settings guidance.
- For calibration, Apple recommends an Outdoor Walk in a flat, open area with good GPS reception at your normal pace for about 20 minutes; the time can be split across sessions. Follow Apple’s instructions for location settings and different speeds. This can improve estimates, not guarantee desk-walk accuracy.
- Compare a short, comfortable session with your pad’s display and note whether you typed or swung your arm. Do not change your gait or compromise balance to improve a number.
If your treadmill explicitly supports Apple Watch gym equipment pairing, follow Apple’s pairing instructions; ordinary walking pads should not be assumed to support it.
When to Skip This Setup
If typing while walking feels unsteady, stop the belt before working or take a separate walk. If your job requires uninterrupted precise typing, a movement break may fit better than an active workstation. If your goal is a clinical heart-rate reading or a precisely measured distance, use an appropriate validated method instead of treating either display as definitive.
Limitations and Frequently Asked Questions
Does typing stop every step being counted?
Not necessarily. Restricted arm motion can affect estimates, but the amount of discrepancy varies. Apple does not provide a universal correction for desk walking.
Should I wear the watch on my ankle or put it in a pocket?
Apple says its sensors work when worn on top of the wrist. We cannot validate alternative placements for steps or heart rate; use the intended fit.
Does Indoor Walk update cardio fitness?
Apple says indoor workouts do not count toward its cardio fitness estimate, which uses eligible outdoor workouts.
How We Prepared This Guide
This guide interprets Apple’s published instructions; we did not test watches or walking pads. For equipment and room-fit considerations, see walking pads and our movement-break guide.
