Choose fish oil or krill oil by the actual EPA and DHA per serving, the full capsule count, your allergy restrictions and the evidence for your reason for taking it. Krill oil is not a proven universal upgrade. A newer trial found greater blood-level increases with krill oil, while an older matched-dose trial found similar levels. Neither finding proves that one retail bottle prevents more disease or improves memory more than another.
This guide compares the two forms first, then provides fish-oil listings and a verified krill-oil example. We have not independently tested these products.
Fish Oil vs. Krill Oil at a Glance
| Decision | Fish oil | Krill oil |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Fish-derived oil; formats include softgels and liquids. | Oil from krill, a crustacean; often sold as softgels. |
| What to compare | EPA and DHA amounts per full labeled serving. Total oil weight is not the same number. | |
| Absorption claims | Results depend on formulation, dose and study conditions. | Some trials favor krill for blood-level changes; that is not proof of superior clinical outcomes. |
| Buying advantage | Compare the existing liquid and softgel options below if those formats fit your routine. | Consider a specific product when its serving, ingredients and capsule size suit you; do not assume all krill products match a trial. |
| Allergy check | Check fish source and all other ingredients with your clinician if allergic. | Shellfish allergy makes professional advice especially important. |
| When neither fits | If you need a vegan option, compare an algal product’s EPA/DHA label. Do not assume every algae product or its capsule is suitable for every allergy. | |
The NCCIH overview distinguishes fish, krill, fish-liver and algal oils. These are not interchangeable products. Cod-liver oil also supplies vitamins A and D; algal products differ in whether they supply DHA alone or EPA as well.
What the Absorption Research Actually Found
A 2015 randomized trial enrolled 66 healthy adults and compared three preparations for four weeks: fish-oil ethyl esters, fish-oil triglycerides and krill oil, with matched EPA and DHA doses. It found no statistically significant difference in the primary total plasma EPA+DHA endpoint. Several authors were affiliated with DSM Nutritional Products, which matters when weighing the evidence.
“Similar plasma and RBC levels of EPA + DHA were achieved across fish oil and krill oil products”
— Yurko-Mauro and colleagues, 2015; an excerpt from the study conclusion, which specifies matched dose and concentrations.
A 2026 randomized, double-blind trial followed 72 healthy adults for 12 weeks at 1.1 g/day of omega-3 fatty acids. It found about 1.5-fold greater increases from baseline in plasma EPA and DHA with krill oil than fish oil. This is meaningful evidence about blood-level response in that experiment, not a reason to ignore the earlier trial or to promise a health benefit from every krill product.
The studies differ in duration, products and participants. Their outcomes concern circulating fatty acids; neither comparison establishes fewer heart attacks, better memory or superior symptom relief from the retail products on this page. The 2026 full paper reports no author conflicts of interest and says Aker BioMarine supplied the krill capsules and Neptune supplied the fish-oil capsules. Product supply is relevant context; it does not by itself establish who funded the study.
Read EPA and DHA, Not Just the Oil Weight
Place the two current Supplement Facts panels side by side. Record the serving size, EPA amount and DHA amount, then check how many capsules or how much liquid supplies that serving. Do not compare one brand’s single capsule with another brand’s multi-capsule serving. A larger total oil number on the front of the bottle is not enough to choose a winner.
For a hypothetical label with 300 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA per two capsules, the combined amount is 500 mg per full serving—not 500 mg per capsule. This example explains label arithmetic; it is not a recommended dose or a claim about a listed product.
Keep practical details separate from efficacy. Capsule size, flavor, storage instructions and your ability to take a product consistently can matter. None proves that the product is purer or works better. Check a certification against the exact product and, where available, the bottle’s lot number in the certifier’s directory; a brand-level logo does not verify every SKU or batch.
Compare a Krill-Oil Listing
Sports Research Antarctic Krill Oil, 1000 mg oil, 60 softgels is an example returned in stock by Amazon’s catalog on October 25, 2026. The oil amount in the product name is not its EPA+DHA amount. Check the current panel and serving directions before ordering. This identity check does not establish clinical equivalence to the research products or certify the bottle you receive.

When to Skip or Get Advice First
Do not use either oil to replace prescribed treatment. Discuss supplements with your clinician or pharmacist if you take medicines affecting blood clotting, have a fish or shellfish allergy, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are considering them for a child. The NCCIH guidance explains these precautions.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements review distinguishes prescription omega-3 evidence from supplement research. Results from prescription formulations in selected patients do not establish that any over-the-counter oil prevents cardiovascular disease. This guide does not provide a high-dose EPA protocol.
If your diet already meets your needs, first establish what gap a supplement would fill. If your objective is treating a symptom or changing a blood test, discuss that objective before choosing a bottle based on advertising.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is krill oil better absorbed than fish oil?
Some research favors krill oil for blood-level changes, including the 2026 trial discussed above; the 2015 matched-dose trial found similar levels. Product formulation and study design matter. Better blood-level response does not by itself establish better long-term health outcomes.
Is 1000 mg of fish or krill oil 1000 mg of omega-3?
No. Read the EPA and DHA entries and the full serving size. Total oil weight includes other components, so the front-label number alone does not tell you the combined EPA+DHA amount.
Should I switch from fish oil to krill oil?
There is no universal reason to switch. Compare the current labels, ingredients, full serving and suitability with your reason for taking a supplement. A formulation claim or a different oil source is not enough to establish an improvement for you.
Is algae oil an alternative?
Algal oil can provide a vegetarian source of DHA, and some products also contain EPA. Check the exact formulation, capsule materials and allergen information; do not assume that every algal product has both fatty acids or is automatically safe for every allergy.
How do I avoid fish burps?
Follow the product’s directions and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician. We cannot promise that a coating, oil form or flavor eliminates aftertaste for everyone. Do not increase the serving to compensate for a disliked product.

Updated October 25, 2026 using the linked randomized trials, NIH guidance and catalog identity checks. No independent laboratory, oxidation, sensory or matched-product testing was performed. We removed unsupported certification and purity rankings, high-dose self-treatment instructions, and a NOW product description that incorrectly described Nordic Naturals.
